Cardinal Julio Terrazas has responded favorably to the surgery that was done to improve his kidney function. The cardinal, a Redemptorist missionary, underwent surgery on the evening of April 15 , Wednesday.
Dr. Vaca Díez who heads a team of specialists, said that the operation took more than an hour due to complications which were eventually resolved.
According to doctors, this procedure allows Cardinal Terrazas rid of liquids and toxic substances that accumulate in the peritoneal cavity due to the special diet that receives and because of the difficulties in the functioning of the kidneys. This process is known as peritoneal dialysis.
Nutrition is essential
Improve for a good health is essential for him, said Vaca Díez, making clear that his body is accepting good diet administered through the catheter. “The heart and kidney can improve if we improve nutrition. We are committed to bring him to have good conditions,” said the doctor.
It is his state of malnutrition, that added to the degree of dehydration, that forced doctors to admit him in the hospital last week. According to medical reports, over the last year the Cardinal has lost 10 kg, more in recent months.
