‘Apostolato del Mare’: un’iniziativa unica di un Redentorista indiano

(P. Xavier Pinto, un Sacerdote Redentorista che presta servizio come Direttore Nazionale dell’agenzia cattolica ‘Apostolato del Mare’, ha avviato una nuova iniziativa che consiste nel piantare alcune mangrovie per la protezione dell’ambiente. Recentemente, è stato intervistato dalTimes of India, un giornale leader in India).

 “Questo è tutto ciò che posso fare, non posso fare di più”, diceva il famoso marinaio Braccio di Ferro. In un’epoca come questa, quando coloro che lavorano nel mare sono tutti in mare, quei ‘pescatori di uomini’ dei nostri giorni stanno cercando di rendere la loro vita un po’ più sopportabile.

 “Non mi cercate nei momenti propizi”, ha detto P. Xavier Pinto, che presta servizio come Direttore Nazionale dell’agenzia cattolica ‘Apostolato del Mare’, che offre una ‘cura pratica e pastorale’, nonché un importante ‘orecchio’ per l’ascolto di coloro che stanno nel mare, senza distinzione di religione o nazionalità.

L’agenzia, impegnata nei problemi che riguardano i diritti dei pescatori, vittime della pirateria, di ingiusta detenzione, di annegamento, di depressione o malattia, mediante i suoi cappellani e volontari, presta servizio legale per coloro che stanno in difficoltà in mare e per le loro famiglie. Dopo aver prestato servizio come Coordinatore dell’Agenzia Vaticana per l’Asia del Sud, Pinto è stato in prima linea nel fornire sostegni alle vittime dello Tsunami, in particolare alla comunità dei pescatori.

 Con i suoi ‘parrocchiani’ in costante movimento, l’agenzia possiede un vasto network di cappellani e volontari, nei porti di tutto il mondo, che accolgono coloro che lavorano in mare, offrendo ad essi la possibilità di comunicare con i loro amati che stanno a casa, di discutere su problemi o difficoltà attraverso interventi di emergenza o anche aiutandoli ad uscire da sgradevoli situazioni legali.

 “Miriamo a far sì che coloro che si trovano lontano da casa si sentano a casa”, ha affermato Pinto. Fornendo servizi agli impiegati della Marina Mercantile, a coloro che stanno a bordo di navi da crociera ed interessandosi alla causa delle voci più ignorate della comunità dei pescatori, i membri di questa Missione hanno un impegno incredibile da compiere.

 “Abbiamo vinto alcune battaglie, ma non abbiamo vinto la guerra”, Pinto, un ‘campione a tempo pieno dei marittimi’, racconta dei molti casi in cui ha prestato soccorso. Tra le molte cause per cui ha combattuto, ce ne è una del marinaio del Goa, Randolf Monteiro. Con una diagnosi di malattia terminale, Monteiro era sbarcato all’estero. Pinto ha assistito la famiglia per far sì che Monteiro venisse inviato in India per le cure e si è assicurato che i finanziamenti fossero a carico della Compagnia. Ha fornito il sostegno morale alla famiglia durante questi tempi duri ed ha continuato a rimanere in contatto con loro persino dopo che Monteiro ha ceduto alla malattia.
