A Day of Fraternal Joy and Missionary Renewal
On August 1, 2025, the Redemptorist family at St. Alphonsus Community in Karen, Nairobi, joyfully marked the Feast of St. Alphonsus Liguori, founder of the Congregation of the Most Holy Redeemer. The day was graced with a solemn Holy Mass and rich moments of fraternity, reflection, and joyful celebration.
The Eucharistic celebration was presided over by the Mission Superior, Fr Titus Mutiku C.Ss.R, and concelebrated by Fr Augustine Mugambi C.Ss.R (Vice Rector Karen Community), Fr Lewis Mutiso C.Ss.R (Prefect of Students – Theologate), Fr Peter Chitabanta C.Ss.R (Socius), and Fr Dominic Warukenya C.Ss.R (Prefect of Students – Philosophate).
Before Holy Mass, a heartfelt message from the Superior General, Very Rev. Fr Rogério Gomes C.Ss.R, was read by the Mission Superior. In his message titled “Letter of the Superior General to the Whole Congregation on the Feast of St. Alphonsus”, Fr. Gomes invited the entire Redemptorist family to celebrate the feast with open hearts and active missionary commitment, urging us to be “Missionaries of Hope in the footsteps of the Redeemer.
In his homily, Fr Peter Chitabanta C.Ss.R encouraged confreres and formandi alike to imitate the zeal and courage of St. Alphonsus and to be ready for mission wherever the Redeemer calls. He reminded all gathered that fidelity to the mission demands openness, sacrifice, and a deep personal relationship with Christ.
After the Mass, the community came together to celebrate in fraternal joy with a shared meal and fellowship. A highlight of the day was a lively volleyball tournament held in honour of St. Alphonsus, featuring a friendly match between the students of Theology and those of Philosophy. The spirited competition fostered community bonding, healthy recreation, and a joyful expression of unity in diversity.
The Feast of St. Alphonsus in Karen was truly a day of grace, celebration, and Redemptorist spirit, honoring our founder not only in prayer and word but also through joyful living and communion.
