We the Redemptorist family celebrate the Feast of Blessed Conchita Barrecheguren on May 13 each year. She was beatified as a model of deep faith, redemptive suffering, and profound devotion to the Lord despite her fragile health.
Blessed Conchita Barrecheguren was born on November 27, 1905, in Granada, Spain, died on May 13, 1927 (aged 22) and was beatified on May 6, 2023, in Granada, Spain. Conchita was a laywoman, daughter of Francisco Barrecheguren, a Redemptorist lay collaborator. Though she initially desired to become a Carmelite nun, Conchita was prevented by her poor health. She suffered from intestinal inflammation bearing her intense suffering with faith, gentleness, and joy. She lived a quiet and contemplative life, offering her sufferings as a prayer, and was known for her love for the Eucharist, Marian devotion, and desire for holiness. Her father later joined the Redemptorist congregation as a priest after her death.
May 13 is significant because it is the day Conchita died, and it reflects the Church’s tradition of assigning feast days on the day of the Blessed’s or Saint’s “birth to heaven” — their death, marking their entrance into eternal life.
Spiritual Legacy of Blessed Conchita Barrecheguren that testifies to the Redemptive suffering offered with trust in God, her holiness of life, especially among the sick and suffering and a deep spiritual bond between father and daughter, both walking paths of sanctity.
Her story inspires us all, especially the young, the sick, and lay faithful, to seek God in the midst of life’s trials.
