On Good Shepherd Sunday, April 26, 2026, Father Antonio Marrazzo, a Redemptorist member of the Europe South Province (formerly the Province of Naples), passed away. He was 74. As Postulator General of the Redemptorist Congregation, he guided the causes of beatification and canonization for nearly forty years.
Father Antonio Marrazzo was born on October 26, 1952, in Nocera Inferiore (Salerno). After his religious profession (September 29, 1972) and priestly ordination (June 25, 1978), he served as an assistant parish priest in Corato and studied spirituality in Rome (1981–1984) before becoming a missionary and associate novice in Ciorani (1984–1986).
Since 1986, he has served as Postulator General of the Congregation of the Most Holy Redeemer, overseeing numerous causes of beatification and canonization. Among the most significant are those of Saint Paul VI, Saint Bartolo Longo, the Redemptorist Blesseds Gennaro Maria Sarnelli, Francis Xavier Seelos, Domenico Trčka, Blessed Maria Celeste Crostarosa, Blessed Maria de la Concepción (Conchita) Barrecheguren, and the Redemptorist Martyrs of Ukraine, Madrid, and Cuenca. There are also the causes of many other venerables of various nationalities whose heroic virtues Father Marrazzo has led to declarations.
Father Marrazzo left this world accompanied by the prayers and care of his confreres, who supported him in the final months of his battle with illness. Father General was present at his bedside at the time of his death.
His passing, which occurred on the day the Church celebrated Christ the Good Shepherd, and the 160th anniversary of the veneration of Our Lady of Perpetual Help in the Church of Saint Alphonsus in Rome, is welcomed by the Congregation of the Most Holy Redeemer as a providential sign. Father Marrazzo faithfully served the cause of saints for almost his entire priestly life, bestowing upon the Church figures of Redemptorist and universal sanctity.
