On Sunday, September 6, 2026, the Redemptorist parish of Szczecin, Poland, experienced a historic moment: the dedication of the Church of the Most Holy Redeemer, presided over by Archbishop Wiesław Śmigiel, Metropolitan Archbishop of Szczecin-Kamień, and in the presence of Father Mariusz Mazurkiewicz, C.Ss.R., Vicar of the Province of Warsaw. It was a day of gratitude for a journey that began over thirty years ago, from the first celebrations in a modest wooden chapel to the growth of a community that today finds its home in a building inspired by ancient early Christian basilicas.
The celebration of the church’s consecration in Szczecin brought together many Redemptorists who have worked in the parish in recent years, as well as priests from our deanery, parishioners, and guests. It was a beautiful moment to give thanks to God for the gift of the church, for all those who have contributed to the parish community over the years, and for those who today care for its spiritual life.
The Parish of the Most Holy Redeemer was established by Archbishop Kazimierz Majdański on March 24, 1992. The first parish priest of the new parish, located on the outskirts of the city, was Father Edward Ryba, C.Ss.R. Initially, the parish consisted of single-family houses on Somosierry Street and a couple of residential buildings located on the site of a former military training ground.
The first religious services were held in the middle of nowhere, in a wooden chapel that housed only the altar. During services, the faithful remained outside. A cross was erected next to the temporary chapel, which today hangs at the chapel entrance.
On the first anniversary of the parish’s founding, Bishop Jan Gałecki consecrated the land designated for the construction of the chapel. In 1993-1994, a chapel was built for the parish’s needs, designed by Leszek Nowak of Poznań. It is a three-nave building with a gabled roof, without a bell tower, and rectangular in plan. It features a metal frame and masonry made of building materials. The body of the chapel is inspired by early Christian basilicas.
On December 11, 1994, Archbishop Marian Przykucki consecrated the chapel. After years of work and embellishments, the church had taken on the characteristics of a lasting building, and Archbishop Wiesław Śmigiel decided to consecrate it.
May the consecrated church be for all of us a place of encounter with God, of prayer and of strengthening our faith, as well as a home open to every person.
