Young Missionaries: Make her Known to Make Him known

November 3-5, 2023, the Redemptorist Youth Mission of Baclaran (RYM Baclaran) organized a Grand Icon Youth Mission to promote the devotion to the Icon of Our Mother of Perpetual Help and to reach out to the youth in the Sitio Maligaya, Baclaran. The three-day program was as follows:

Day 1: A Mass with the rite of sending forth took place at 9:30 AM on Thursday at the National Shrine of Our Mother of Perpetual Help in Baclaran, presided over by Fr. Rano, C.Ss.R., and Fr. Edward, C.Ss.R., Spiritual Director of RYM Baclaran. A group representative received the Icon of Our Mother of Perpetual Help as a symbol of the mandate: “Go and make Her known to the world.”

The representative delegation organized a procession of the Icon from Baclaran Church to the chapel of the community Sitio. The RYM members walked and prayed the rosary, passing through the crowded streets of Manila.

At 11:00 AM, the opening ceremony of the mission took place in the Chapel, and in the afternoon, the Young Missionaries of RYM Baclaran, in collaboration with the youth of the Sitio Maligaya community, split into two groups to visit the sick and pray with the icon at each family’s home.

In the afternoon, there was a sharing session led by two young members of RYM on the meaning of the icon of Our Mother of Perpetual Help and how to pray the novena.

In the evening, Mass was celebrated, and prayers were said specifically for the community, with the participation of all members.

Day 2: In the morning, there was a Novena and Mass at 10:00 AM. After that, one group continued to visit the families in the community, while another group led a catechesis session   the children of Sitio Maligaya. In the evening of the same day, the young missionaries of RYM Baclaran organized a YouthSerye, a prayer worship and formation. The prayer service, which combined sharing, discussion, prayer, hymns, and lively youth dances, appealed to the young people of Sitio Maligaya.

Day 3: On Sunday, November 5, 2023, the Vice-Provincial Superior, Fr. Raymond Urriza, C.Ss.R., presided over the closing Mass of the three-day Grand Icon Youth Mission. Being asked about their feelings on participating in such a Redemptorist mission, one RYM member said: “It feels significant to be able to go and introduce the icon of Mother of Perpetual Help, pray, and visit the families.”

It is known that during the three days, the members of the RYM Baclaran group took turns attending and organizing the programs of the three-day mission. This is a commendable effort of the RYM Baclaran because they are very aware of the mission. At the same time, with their love for the Virgin Mary, they also witness and introduce her to everyone—making her known and making Him known.

The mission of making Her known is not only a mandate of Pope Pius IX for the Redemptorists but also for all who love her under the title of Our Mother of Perpetual Help, especially for the Young Missionaries. This is also the first time that the Redemptorists of Baclaran have organized a mission with young missionaries to make an effort to invite and create opportunities for the youth to participate in the shared mission of the Congregation, reminding us that all of us are called to become Missionaries of Hope following the footsteps of the Redeemer.
