Heavy rainfall causing floodwaters a week ago in Queensland’s Burdekin region are causing road closures, evacuations, and cancellations of religious services. Despite these challenges, clergy members and volunteers are working tirelessly to support those affected. In Ayr, Fr Manoj CSsR and Fr JB provide updates and reassurance to their community. St. Joseph’s Church in Giru and its surrounding community are among the hardest hit, with masses cancelled due to impassable roads and the Bruce Highway inundated.

Local authorities have issued evacuation orders, and emergency services are working around the clock to assist those trapped by the flooding. “Bishop Timmothy J. Harris’ pastoral letter and engagement with local authorities have been impressive,” said Fr Manoj. “We have been reaching out to our parishioners and visiting them whenever possible.

The Bureau of Meteorology has issued a Moderate Flood Warning for the Burdekin River, warning that renewed flooding at Sellheim could have significant repercussions for Dalbeg and Inkerman Bridge. Major flooding has already been recorded at Taemas on the Cape River, adding further distress to communities in St. Joseph’s Clare and St. Colman’s Home Hill.

The situation has left entire communities cut off. The Burdekin River at Sellheim has peaked at 17.28 meters, while at Dalbeg, it has reached 17.48 meters.

The response from religious leaders and volunteers underscores the resilience of the Burdekin’s faith communities in times of crisis. “Whenever God’s people and His creation face such challenges, we feel privileged to walk alongside them,” Fr Manoj reflected. “We ask for continued prayers as we navigate this difficult time.”
