Honouring of Fr. Kelly with SCU Scholarship

Australian Catholic University has announced a new PhD scholarship honouring the legacy of Redemptorist priest and theologian Fr Anthony Kelly CSsR, one of Australia’s most influential Catholic thinkers whose work helped shape generations of theologians, students, and pastoral leaders.

The Anthony J. Kelly CSsR PhD Scholarship, launched through a partnership between Australian Catholic University and the Redemptorists (Province of Oceania), will support doctoral candidates undertaking research in systematic theology inspired by Fr Kelly’s interdisciplinary vision, bringing together theology, philosophy, literature, music, and the arts.

The university described Fr Kelly as a theologian, poet, artist, philosopher, mentor, and teacher whose work combined intellectual rigour with spiritual depth and creativity.

For many within the Redemptorist family and beyond, however, Fr Tony was remembered not only for academic achievement, but for his ability to communicate theology as something alive, contemplative, and deeply connected to the human experience.

As a professor at ACU, Fr Kelly supervised and mentored generations of Australian theologians. Yet his influence also extended beyond lecture halls and academic journals into pastoral ministry, prayer, preaching, and digital evangelisation.

Fr Tony was also a supporter and contributor to Common Home TV and the Bread 4 Today prayer community, where his reflections and prayers continue to be shared today. Through video reflections and spiritual writings, he brought the same theological imagination that marked his academic work into spaces accessible to ordinary people seeking meaning, faith, and hope in everyday life.

In announcing the scholarship, ACU School of Theology National Head Associate Professor Joel Hodge said Fr Kelly left “an unparalleled legacy” through his supervision and mentoring of emerging theologians.

“We hope this doctoral scholarship will continue Tony’s legacy of nurturing and mentoring emerging theologians and scholars for the benefit of academia, the Church and wider society,” Associate Professor Hodge said.

Redemptorists Oceania Provincial Fr John Hodgson CSsR described Fr Kelly as “one of Australia’s most engaging theological voices.”

“Intellectually rigorous, deeply human, poetic and constantly attentive to the wondrous presence of God in our contemporary world,” Fr Hodgson said.

At a time when theology can risk becoming disconnected from ordinary life, Fr Kelly consistently presented faith as something imaginative, relational, and grounded in lived human experience.

The new scholarship comes as ACU continues to strengthen its global reputation in theological research. The university currently ranks first in Australia and among the top 20 universities globally for Theology, Divinity and Religious Studies in the 2026 QS World University Rankings by Subject.
