On Sunday, June 28, the community of Frosinone experienced a historic and deeply spiritual moment: the solemn elevation of St. Gerard Parish to the status of a Diocesan Shrine. This milestone, the culmination of a long journey of faith and devotion, brought together a large number of faithful who gathered with heartfelt joy around a church that now holds an even greater significance for the Diocese.
The Eucharistic celebration, held at 6:30 p.m., was presided over by His Excellency Archbishop-Bishop Santo Marcianò of the Diocese of Frosinone–Veroli–Ferentino. Concelebrating with him, in a spirit of profound communion, were Fr. Gennaro Sorrentino, Provincial Superior of the Redemptorists of Southern Europe; Fr. Luciano Maloszek, Superior of the Frosinone community; the Redemptorist confreres of the local community; several diocesan priests; and representatives of the civil and military authorities.
A Journey of Spiritual Preparation
The solemn recognition was preceded by an intense three-day period of prayer and reflection. A particularly meaningful moment took place on Friday, when the community celebrated the 250th anniversary of the presence of the Redemptorist Fathers in Frosinone.
The triduum and its keynote conference were led by Fr. Vincenzo La Mendola, a distinguished expert on the Redemptorist charism. Through his reflections, he retraced the history and mission that have long united the Congregation with this region, providing the spiritual foundation for this important transition to diocesan shrine status.
A New Beacon of Spirituality
The designation as a shrine is far more than an honorary recognition for the parish. It marks the beginning of a renewed mission: St. Gerard Church is now affirmed as a safe harbor of welcome, prayer, and reconciliation for pilgrims and local residents alike.
With the final blessing imparted by Archbishop Marcianò, a memorable Sunday came to a close, one that will remain in the hearts of the faithful as the beginning of a new chapter, rooted in the Redemptorist tradition and looking confidently toward the future of the Christian community of Frosinone.
