The Redemptorist Province of Europe South experienced a day of profound joy last Saturday, September 19, with the temporary religious profession of José Antonio Madruga Madruga. The celebration took place in the Parish of Perpetual Help in Mérida, his hometown. Along with family and friends, numerous confreres, friends, and lay people from Redemptorist communities attended, arriving from various parts of Spain and even from Italy (where José completed his novitiate), who wished to accompany him on this important moment in his vocational journey.
The Eucharist was presided over by Father Provincial of Europe South Province, Gennaro Sorrentino, in an atmosphere marked by closeness, fraternity, and thanksgiving. The assembled community shared José’s joy and, with him, renewed their faith in the call that the Lord continues to address today to those who choose to dedicate their lives to the service of the Gospel and the Redemptorist mission.
In light of the Gospel proclaimed, Fr. Sorrentino emphasized the importance of remaining in Christ. He recalled that consecrated life is founded on a living and constant relationship with the Lord, which gives rise to fidelity to one’s vows and the ability to respond generously to the mission. Only by remaining united to Christ, it is possible to joyfully and perseveringly follow the path of religious consecration.
He also highlighted the value of community life as a privileged space for human, spiritual, and missionary growth. Community is the place where we learn to live the Gospel and where we find the impetus to reach out to others and proclaim abundant redemption.
The celebration was marked by a particularly familiar and festive atmosphere. The presence of people from diverse backgrounds highlighted the bonds of communion that unite the Redemptorist family beyond borders and expressed their affection for José at this crucial stage of his vocational journey.
José’s temporary profession is a source of gratitude for the entire Congregation of the Most Holy Redeemer and, in particular, for the Province of Europe South. At a time when every vocation is a precious gift for the Church and for the mission, this commitment represents a sign of hope for the present and future of our Redemptorist family.
We extend special thanks to the Community of Perpetual Help of Mérida for their hospitality and dedication in preparing this celebration, as well as to all those who, with their presence, closeness, and prayers, accompanied José on this most significant day. We entrust his vocation to the protection of the Mother of Perpetual Help, Saint Alphonsus, and all the Redemptorist saints and blesseds, so that he may continue to grow in fidelity to the Lord and in readiness for mission.
