Father Peter Gnantina Phiakeo, C.Ss.R. a priest ordained in April 2026, assigned as a Redemptorist Missionary writes his missionary works and experiences in the Diocese of Thakhek, Thailan.
The Redemptorist mission in Thakhek, Laos, began in 2008 under the guidance of Father Phaiboon Udomdej, a Redemptorist missionary from Thailand. Since then, the ministry has focused on three main areas: providing spiritual support and care to religious nuns, promoting vocations and youth education, and pastoral care for impoverished families and rural communities in the Diocese of Thakhek.
I was ordained a priest of the Congregation of the Most Holy Redeemer three months ago and am currently assigned to the Redemptorist Mission House in Thakhek, where I serve as a caretaker and trainer. One of my top priorities is improving the training environment. Since the seminary buildings and facilities had been neglected for some time, we have begun renovating the bedrooms, bathrooms, kitchen, water system, and other necessary areas.
In August 24–25, 2026, we hosted a “Come and See” vocational camp for 20 young men. Through prayer, scripture reflection, group activities, agricultural work, sports, and experiential learning, these young people had the opportunity to experience life in a seminary and reflect on their vocations. We hope to continue walking with them and providing ongoing support even after the camp.
This ministry has also developed agricultural and animal husbandry initiatives, which not only help produce food for community members but also form part of the seminarian training program, helping them learn responsibility, patience, teamwork, and the value of working with their hands.
Our pastoral work continues in rural villages, particularly with youth, catechism students, catechism teachers, and impoverished families. We travel to communities, conduct catechism classes, provide spiritual care and support to the faithful, and assist families according to their individual needs.
However, despite continuing to face challenges in many areas, particularly regarding budget, facilities, vocational training, and pastoral expansion, this mission is gradually developing and progressing. Our hope is to build a stronger training house, foster vocations among the younger generation, develop youth and community pastoral care in the village, and create sustainable activities to further support the mission.
