On 25th August, we, the Redemptorist family, celebrate the feast of Blessed Dominik Trčka, C.Ss.R., a faithful missionary and courageous martyr who gave his life for Christ and His Church.
Blessed Dominik Trčka was born in 1886 in Frýdlant nad Ostravicí, in what is now the Czech Republic. He joined the Congregation of the Most Holy Redeemer and was ordained a priest in 1910. He dedicated himself wholeheartedly to the mission of preaching the Gospel and serving God’s people, particularly among the Eastern Catholic communities.
During the years of communist persecution, Blessed Dominik remained faithful to Christ and to his vocation as a Redemptorist. Because of his faith and missionary work, he was arrested, imprisoned, and subjected to harsh treatment. Even in prison, he refused to abandon his faith or his commitment to God. He continued to pray and encourage his fellow prisoners, offering his suffering as a sacrifice for Christ and the Church.
His final years were marked by loneliness, illness, and suffering, but his faith remained strong. He died in prison on 25th August 1959, remaining faithful to the end. His life reminds us that Christian discipleship is not measured by comfort or success, but by faithfulness, courage, and love.
As Redemptorists, we look to Blessed Dominik Trčka as an example of perseverance in difficult times. His life challenges us to remain faithful to our vocation, courageous in witnessing to the Gospel, and generous in serving God’s people. May his example inspire us to place Christ above every difficulty and to remain steadfast in faith, even when the path is demanding.
