Singapore, January 17, 2025—Novena Church witnessed a historic moment as Deacon Antony Prabhu, CSsR, was ordained into the Priesthood. This was the first ordination at the new Novena Church since its blessing in 2017. The last ordination held at Novena Church took place 26 years ago, in 1998. Fr. Antony’s ordination was especially meaningful as it coincided with the feast day of St. Antony of the Desert, a saint whose intercession Fr. Antony relied on throughout his formation.
In his homily, Cardinal William Goh expressed his joy in Fr. Antony – highlighting his humility—a key virtue for every priest. He wished him well as he is all set on his mission to serve the people of Singapore, especially at Novena Shrine, where Catholics and non-Catholics alike come to pray and find solace. In his thanksgiving speech, Fr. Antony reflected on his spiritual journey, drawing parallels between his Indian ancestors, who helped build Singapore’s infrastructure, and his mission to build spiritual pathways. He shared, “Not so much to lay physical roads, but to build roads of faith, hope, and service,” underscoring the importance of creating lasting spiritual connections for future generations.
The event was attended by over 50 priests, including Redemptorists from the Philippines, India, Thailand, and Burkina Faso. Dignitaries such as His Excellency Senarath Dissanayake, High Commissioner of Sri Lanka; Mr. Ahamed Razee, Minister and Head of SL Chancery; and singer-songwriter Corrine May were present to witness the sacred occasion. In conclusion, Fr. Antony promised to serve with humility, dedicating his life to bringing others closer to Jesus through our Blessed Mother Mary. His journey is a testament to God’s grace and the support of those who have prayed for him. As he begins his ministry, Fr. Antony’s mission is clear: to reach to the most abandoned and build a community united in faith, offering spiritual guidance and serving with love and compassion.
