The cool and peaceful atmosphere of Mataloko, Bajawa, Flores, Indonesia is the perfect setting to “take a spiritual breath.” In this serene and refreshing place, members of the Redemptorist communities from Flores and Lembata—currently serving in the Dioceses of Larantuka, Maumere, and Labuan Bajo—gathered for a three-day retreat at Tabor Retreat House, Ngada Regency, East Nusa Tenggara, from Tuesday to Friday, August 5–8, 2025.
As part of the Redemptorist Congregation of the Indonesian Province, these missionaries are assigned to various dioceses across the country. Amid the busyness of pastoral work and the dynamic demands of ministry, this retreat offered a precious moment to pause, reflect, and return to the roots of their calling.
With the theme “Returning to the Roots of the Redemptorist Vocation,” the retreat invited participants to meditate on Sacred Scripture and rediscover the spirit instilled by their founder, St. Alphonsus Maria de Liguori—a spirit that serves as the foundation for the congregation’s mission.
Over three days, they were guided by Fr. Thomas Wungo, CSsR, who led them through reflection on three core values of Redemptorist life: pastoral zeal, simplicity, and solid fraternity.
Pastoral zeal was emphasized as the path for encountering Christ the Redeemer in the people they serve. In that service, their priestly vocation finds deeper meaning and strength.
Fr. Thomas highlighted that simplicity is not just a lifestyle, but a disposition of the heart: “True simplicity shines when we are willing to let go of things that bind and distract us, and set out with a humble heart to bring Christ the Redeemer to be known and experienced by the poor and little ones,” he shared passionately.
The third point, solid fraternity, was seen as the foundation of fruitful ministry. From a community grounded in mutual support and encouragement flows a vibrant missionary spirit. These reflections drew inspiration from two significant Gospel stories: Jesus’ rejection in His hometown and the journey of the two disciples to Emmaus.
This retreat brought much-needed spiritual renewal. The atmosphere of prayer, silence, and togetherness re-energized the Redemptorists for their continued mission in the three dioceses across Flores.
They returned with renewed hearts and strengthened spirits. The prayers and support of the Catholic faithful are deeply hoped for, so that these Redemptorist missionaries may continue to proclaim Christ the Redeemer wherever they are sent.
