In a beautiful display of faith, fraternity, and youthful energy, over 102 participants— including Redemptorist priests, students, and young people—gathered in Ibadan, Nigeria, for the first-ever physical meeting of the Redemptorist Youth and Vocation Ministry (RYVM) in the Conference of Redemptorists of Africa and Madagascar (COREAM) Redemptorist priests in youth ministry and Redemptorist youths from Madagascar, Congo, Burkina Faso, Benin Republic, Ghana, Angola and Nigeria all converged in Ibadan from July 31st to August 4th, 2025 to celebrate the physical phase of the COREAM RYVM Jubilee. The event, held under the uplifting theme “Pilgrims of Hope,” marked a historic milestone in the journey of RYVM across the African continent.
The celebration opened with the Holy Mass, presided over by the COREAM Co-ordinator, Fr. Noel Sottima, CSsR, who also officially declared the event open. The COREAM RYVM Co-ordinator, Fr. Godwin Abbah, CSsR, was present throughout, guiding the unfolding of this landmark occasion. A message from the Superior General, Fr. Rogério Gomes, CSsR, was read aloud to inspire the youths at the beginning of the gathering, reminding them of their mission and calling in today’s world.
Throughout the three days, participants were enriched by thought-provoking talks from distinguished speakers: Fr. Nicolas Ayouba, CSsR Lady Judith Agu, Fr. Godwin Abbah, Prof. Isaac Ukpokolo, and Fr. Temitope Benedict Adu, CSsR, each reflecting on different dimensions of the Jubilee’s theme. Delegates also shared reports of youth ministry activities in their respective units, offering mutual encouragement and learning. This was followed by exciting cultural presentations displaying the rich diversity and creativity across the region.
A Touch of Grace: The Sisters of St. Gerard
One of the deeply enriching moments of the Jubilee celebration was the presence of the Sisters of St. Gerard, whose joyful witness and simplicity added a special flavour to the gathering. In their presentation, the sisters introduced the young people to the beauty of their life and vocation, shedding light on the diverse apostolates they carry out across the region—ranging from the care of orphans and the sick in hospitals, to running schools, bakeries, and other works of mercy. Their session was interactive, with the youth eagerly engaging them with questions about religious life and service. The highlight of the presentation was a delightful musical rendition by one of the sisters. Her inspiring song drew the youth to their feet as they danced with the sisters in a joyful expression of unity, faith, and hope. Their presence was not only inspiring but also a quiet reminder of the vastness of the Redemptorist family, and the power of consecrated life lived with love and generosity.
One of the most moving moments was the Ignite ceremony: a night vigil, which featured a rosary procession, a visit to Our Lady, Taizé-style adoration, intercessory prayers for all Redemptorist Conferences, and an exuberant bonfire praise night. The vigil concluded with the Divine Mercy Chaplet before the Blessed Sacrament—an expression of youthful devotion that touched every heart present.
Recreation and fraternal bonding were also vital parts of the experience, with sports, games, and a city tour of Ibadan (including the Zoo of the University of Ibadan) allowing the participants to relax and connect informally. The celebration ended in high spirits with a joyful and colourful dinner party, leaving all with cherished memories and renewed commitment to be true pilgrims of hope in today’s world.
The success of this Jubilee gathering is a sign of new life and deeper collaboration within COREAM RYVM, and a beacon of hope for Redemptorist youth ministry in Africa and Madagascar.
