This publication by Father Roberto Etcheverry, C.Ss.R. (member of the Pedro Donders Province) on the “Theological Message of the Icon of Our Lady of Perpetual Help” is intended for Redemptorists and devotees of the Marian icon who wish to delve deeper into the epiphanic world of Byzantine icons. To approach the interpretation of the image, it aims to learn the aesthetic language of the style and iconographic scheme, so in tune with the theology of redemption of St. Alphonsus. This theological essay contains many original aspects, the fruit of the author’s reflection and systematic organization, an iconographer and theologian. The index provides a glimpse of the work’s characteristics.
The icon of Perpetual Help, the most widespread in the West, contains enormous catechetical content and is a great treasure for deepening our Redemptorist spirituality and transmitting it to the faithful. Recalling Pope Pius IX’s request, “Make her known,” it is necessary, as the author says, to delve into the depths of the message, for no one can “make known” what they do not know. Finally, it should be emphasized that the essay connects, in the icon’s mystagogical dynamic, theological content and Redemptorist spirituality, centered on meditation, contemplative prayer, Marian intercession, and the Passion of Christ.
