Over the course of three weekdays, 53 confreres gathered at our Redemptorist Retreat Center in Oconomowoc for a significant and meaningful final Chapter. Fr. Noel Eshikena, Vice-Provincial Vicar of the Vice-Province of Nigeria, joined Redemptorists of the Denver Province at the gathering, which commenced on April 28 and concluded on April 30. The agenda was comprehensive, featuring a presentation by our Provincial Superior, Fr. Kevin Zubel, a detailed report from Fr. Eshikena regarding the life and ministry of confreres in the Vice Province of Nigeria, and an organized voting process for the approval of five postulata. In addition to addressing these important matters, the assembly participated in a beautiful liturgy during which Ms. Toni Dunning was formally welcomed as a Redemptorist Lay Missionary. Fr. Kevin officiated the ceremony, which was a joyful occasion welcoming Toni on behalf of all members of the Denver Province.

All five postulata were approved by majority vote. These postulata addressed several significant issues: the proposal for the Provinces of Baltimore, Denver and Mexico to unite as The Seelos Province of North America, with the Extra-Patriam designated as its Vice Province; the establishment of a Preparatory Commission and an Electoral Committee; the ratification of new Electoral Law; the planning and organization of the First Provincial Chapter; and the request to suppress the existing Denver Province. During an open-mic session, members shared heartfelt and emotional reflections about the rich history of ministries in the Denver Province over the past thirty years, as well as their hopes and uncertainties regarding the future of the new Seelos Province of North America.

During the liturgy on the final day, Fr. Kevin delivered an inspiring message of hope. He emphasized the importance of trusting in God throughout this period of transition and expressed his conviction that unifying the three Provinces will bring renewal and vitality to ministry and communal life. He encouraged everyone to embrace this change as Redemptorists committed to being devoted shepherds to God’s people.

As we move forward in the process of unification, we ask for God’s continued blessings and guidance. This journey toward unity among the Provinces of Baltimore, Denver   and Mexico presents a unique opportunity for confreres to form new connections, share their diverse experiences, and grow in mutual understanding. The Mission Assembly scheduled in June in Mexico will be a significant moment to gather, strengthen relationships, and collaborate more closely as we work toward a common purpose. May this time of transition bring renewed energy and a deeper sense of community within our shared Redemptorist mission. Fr. Anthony Nguyen, C.Ss.R.
