Scala News received the communication of Father Adalberto from Mexico, who informed us about the situation of the Redemptorist family after the two earthquakes. Two massive earthquakes struck Mexico on 7th and 19th September 2017. The second earthquake was with an estimated magnitude of 7.1.  The earthquake caused damage in the Mexican states of Puebla and Morelos and in the Greater Mexico City area, including the collapse of more than 40 buildings. The earthquakes killed almost 360 people and more than 6,000 people were injured.

Here is the message:

“First of all endless thanks to Father General for his message in which he expresses his concern for the situation in which the people of Mexico lives. Thanks to God, none of our confreres were affected by the two major earthquakes that occurred on the 7th and 19th of September of last September.

However, many people around us have been injured. Some families can not return to their homes because of damage and have to go to live with relatives or hotels.

Three of our homes are located within the affected territory: Two in Mexico City and one in the city of Puebla.

Our homes did not suffer any great damage though the Churches did. Roofs and walls of the Churches damaged especially the Church of the Holy Trinity in Puebla and the Church of the Most Holy Trinity in Mexico City.

For us, the priority is to take care of needs of the people. We hope that later we will be able to repair the Churches.”

Adalberto Alfaro, C.Ss.R.
