Sr. Alfonsa Karpatha, M.Ss.R., the provincial of the Missionary Sisters of the Redeemer in Ukraine speaks to Fr Joseph Ivel Mendanha, C.Ss.R., General Consultor on the founding, charism, presence, work, the number of sisters, the presence worldwide of the Congregation of the Missionary Sisters of the Most Holy Redeemer founded in 1957 by the Redemptorists of Bavaria in Southern Germany to go out to be missionaries in Japan. Today the sisters are in Japan, Europe and in South America working closely with Redemptorists in proclaiming the Good News to the poor and abandoned. Sr. Alfonsa speaks about her own personal vocation and desire to be a missionary sister and above all to be part of the Redemptorist family, from the time of the suffering of the Catholics of the Ukrainian Byzantine Rite in Soviet times to her actually entering the Congregation aided by the Redemptorist Provincial in Lviv in Ukraine. She along with Sr Theodora, M.Ss.R. the present Superior General of the Congregation were the first sisters from Ukraine.
Sr Alfonsa also speaks about the challenge of leadership during the time of war, the mission of the sisters in the midst of war and suffering and brokenness, the response to not look to far ahead but to take small steps each day in responding to suffering and tragedy despite the sisters own personal suffering and uncertainty and tension.
She has a simple message for anyone wishing to join the Missionary Sisters, “God is good, give yourself courageously to him and follow him, He will take care of the rest” as has been her own story of courage.
She has a final message of Hope and Trust for all the people of Ukraine in the midst of the war.
