Commemorating the Tricentenary of a Saint, Celebrating the Faith of a Community

On the momentous occasion of the birth tricentenary of St. Gerard Majella, the village of Mandiakudar witnessed a landmark event in its spiritual journey, the inauguration and blessing of a new chapel named in honor of this beloved saint. A cherished dream long nurtured by the faithful of the area was finally realized on October 19, 2025, marking a day of deep joy, gratitude, and celebration for the entire parish community.

This event holds special significance as it coincides with the 300th birth anniversary of St. Gerard Majella, a saint known across the Catholic world as a powerful intercessor and miracle worker, particularly venerated by families and expectant mothers. To commemorate his legacy and to respond to the growing spiritual needs of the people, the Sub-station church was erected in Mandiakudar, a vibrant village under the care of Risen Christ Church, Kalunga, in the Diocese of Rourkela.

A Milestone in the Mission of the Redemptorists

The presence of the Redemptorist missionaries in the Rourkela Diocese dates back to 1990s, when they first began their ministry of evangelization and pastoral care in the region. Over the years, their mission has flourished, particularly in Kalunga Parish, where they now serve more than 1,800 families across multiple substations.

Their pastoral work includes not only the administration of sacraments and spiritual direction, but also active involvement in parochial education, youth and women’s empowerment programs, and community development initiatives. The establishment of the new chapel at Mandiakudar reflects both the growth of the Catholic community in this area and the Redemptorists’ commitment to walking with the people in faith and service.

The Chapel at Mandiakudar: A Home for Worship and Community Life

The new St. Gerard Majella Chapel becomes the eighth substation of the Kalunga parish, serving a cluster of over 200 Catholic families spread across six nearby villages. It stands not only as a structure of bricks and mortar but as a symbol of unity, perseverance, and the living faith of a vibrant rural Christian community.

A Day of Joy and Blessing

The day’s celebrations began with the welcoming of esteemed guests, including Fr. Petrus, the Chancellor of the Diocese of Rourkela, Fr. Samir Kujur, the parish priest of Kalunga, and Fr. Erenius Ekka, the Rector of the Redemptorist community. They were warmly received by the local faithful with a traditional cultural dance, reflecting the joy and gratitude of the people.

This was followed by the Holy Eucharistic Celebration, presided over by Fr. Petrus, during which he offered prayers and words of encouragement to the community. After the Mass, he solemnly blessed the new chapel, dedicating it under the patronage of St. Gerard Majella. The blessing was witnessed by numerous priests, religious, and lay faithful, who came together to give thanks to God for this new place of worship.

Following the religious ceremony, the entire assembly were served to a community breakfast and lunch, generously organized and served by local volunteers, a true reflection of communal spirit and hospitality.

A Colourful Cultural Program

As part of the celebration, a cultural program was held, exhibiting the talents of the village’s youth and parish groups. The performances, which included traditional songs, dances, and skits, were deeply appreciated by the guests and served as a vibrant expression of faith, culture, and joy.

Each performance was a testament to the careful preparation and devotion of the local community, adding an extra layer of festivity to the day’s spiritual atmosphere.

Gratitude and Hope for the Future

As the celebrations drew to a close, heartfelt words of thanks were extended to all who contributed to making this dream a reality — from the donors and builders to the priests, parishioners, and village leaders who laboured together in unity. Special gratitude was expressed to the Redemptorist community for their constant guidance and support.

This day marked not just the blessing of a building, but the blessing of a community’s unwavering faith, rooted in tradition and reaching towards the future with hope.

May St. Gerard Majella, our heavenly patron and powerful intercessor, continue to watch over the faithful of Mandiakudar and all who seek his help. May this chapel be a beacon of light and a sanctuary of peace for generations to come.

Fr. Sameer Kujur, CSsR.
