The village of Kunnambetta in Wayanad was filled with the joyful sound of Christmas carols. This was made possible by seven novices from Nithya Sahaya Matha Parish, run by the Redemptorist congregation. We come from different states and are new to the Malayalam language and carol singing, but our unity and enthusiasm made the experience meaningful.
Even though we did not understand all the Malayalam words, the beauty of the songs touched our hearts. We learned the tunes by listening, and gradually our voices blended together in harmony.
For two days, we went carol singing around our parish in jeeps together with our parishioners. Our parish priest, Fr. Geo, accompanied us throughout the journey, which made the experience more encouraging and joyful. We sang, laughed, and danced during the ride, making the journey memorable.
We visited Christian families as well as Hindu and Muslim homes. Everyone welcomed us warmly. This showed how music can bring people together and spread peace beyond religious differences.
On the third day, Fr. Geo accompanied us when we visited the differently abled women at Sneha Sadan. We also visited the St. Vincent de Paul Rehabilitation Center to share the Christmas joy with the mentally challenged. Through our carol singing, we tried to bring joy, comfort, and hope to everyone we met.
We also visited our cook’s house and her neighbours, without considering religious background.
This carol singing was not just about songs; it was about love, unity, and service. With the guidance and presence of Fr. Geo, our rector and with the blessings and encouragement of Fr. George Mathew, our novice master, and Fr. Binu, our socius, this experience helped us grow closer to the community and truly live the spirit of Christmas.
