From December 16–18, the newly formed Redemptorist Youth and Vocation Commission for the Conference of Europe gathered in Rome. This was more than a professional assembly; it was a retreat into the heart of our shared mission. In a world that often feels fragmented and uncertain for young people, these days together served as a powerful reminder that hope is born when we walk together in friendship and prayer.

A Mission Supported and Shared

The gathering was greatly encouraged by the presence of Fr. Piotr Chyła, Coordinator of the Conference of Europe. Having the opportunity to spend time together as a commission provided vital support for all involved. Fr. Piotr grounded our work in the Redemptorist charism, reminding us that young people—especially the most abandoned—are at the centre of our call and the priority for the Conference of Europe. He invited us to move forward through connection, collaboration, and accompaniment.

Synodal Listening and the Call to the “Other Side”

The team embraced a synodally-aware approach, listening to one another to imagine how we might bridge the gap between our historical charism and the modern lives of young people today.

Central to our reflections was the Gospel of Mark 4:35–41. We meditated on Jesus’ invitation to His disciples: “Let us cross to the other side.” This scripture challenged us to leave the safety of the shore and brave the waters of change. We asked ourselves: How do we, as Redemptorists, cross over to meet young people where they are today? This reflection reminded us that while the journey may be uncertain, we do not sail alone.

“How Do We Cross to the Other Side?”

The productivity of these days resulted in a concrete and exciting roadmap for the journey ahead:

  • Autumn 2026: A European Pilgrimage (Italy) – “Heart of Our Redemptorist Charism: Walking in the Footsteps of Our Saints.” This will gather young adults and ministry leaders from across Europe to journey together in faith.
  • 2027: A Dedicated Leaders’ Retreat – To deepen formation, spiritual life, and community among those in leadership.
  • 2028: A European Congress (Venue TBD) –A gathering to celebrate and strengthen our collective Redemptorist identity.
  • 2032: Historic Anniversary – With great anticipation, we look toward Italy as a potential host for the European Congress, marking the 300th anniversary of our Congregation.

The Journey Begins

Representing the diverse provinces of Europe—Fr. Paweł Drobot, Kristýna Štupáková (Bratislava-Prague), Fr. Sviatoslav Vons (Lviv), Fr. Carlos A. Diego Gutiérrez (Europe South), and Dermot Kelly (Dublin)—we departed Rome with a shared vision.

Rooted in the spirituality of Saint Alphonsus and emboldened by the Gospel, we are ready to cross to the other side. The flame has been reignited.
