The year 2026 opened with a profound sense of spiritual renewal for the Friends of the Redemptorists in Zimbabwe. On January 17th, a vibrant crowd gathered for a day of prayer, reflection, and fellowship, marking a dedicated “Recollection” to set the tone for the months ahead. The atmosphere was one of joyful reunion as “Friends of the Reds” arrived in impressive numbers, demonstrating the deep-rooted community spirit that defines the Redemptorist family in the region.
Leadership Through the Lens of Scripture
The day’s spiritual journey was guided by Fr. Erick S. Makova C.Ss.R, who served as the facilitator. His reflections centered on the theme of Leadership, tracing its evolution through the sacred texts of both the Old and New Testaments.
Fr. Makova highlighted the diverse styles of leadership found in biblical giants:
- Moses: The humble yet firm deliverer who listened to the voice of God.
- Joshua: The courageous successor who led with unwavering faith and strategic vision.
- David: The shepherd king whose leadership was rooted in a heart after God’s own, despite human frailty.
- Jesus: The ultimate model of Servant Leadership, who redefined power as an act of washing the feet of others.
Following the Redemptorist Saints
Moving from scripture to the specific charism of the Redemptorists, Fr. Makova drew inspiration from the lives of the congregation’s most revered saints:
- St. Alphonsus Liguori: The founder, who taught leadership through pastoral zeal and a deep concern for the most abandoned.
- St. Clement Maria Hofbauer: The “Second Founder,” who showed leadership through resilience and adapting the mission to urban environments.
- St. Gerard Majella: The patron of mothers and a humble lay brother whose leadership was expressed through obedience and extraordinary charity.
The day reached its spiritual zenith with the celebration of Holy Mass. The liturgy was dedicated to Our Mother of Perpetual Help, the beloved patroness of the Redemptorists.
As the congregation prayed together, there was a palpable sense of commitment to carry the lessons of biblical and Redemptorist leadership into their daily lives—in their homes, workplaces, and the wider community. The large turnout was a powerful testament to the vitality of the Redemptorist mission in Zimbabwe as it moves forward into 2026.
