The Redemptorist bishops held a meeting in Vila Santo Afonso. The meeting fostered the exchange of diocesan experiences and strengthened the evangelizing mission focused on those most in need, in light of the Redemptorist charism between April 12 and 14.
The Redemptorist bishops of Brazil gathered in Vila Santo Afonso, Guaratinguetá (SP), for a fraternal meeting where they had the opportunity to share the different realities of their respective dioceses. The meeting also serves as a period of spiritual preparation for their participation in the 62nd General Assembly of the CNBB (National Conference of Bishops of Brazil), which will begin on Wednesday the 15th in Aparecida (SP). The central theme of the Assembly is the vote and possible approval of the new General Guidelines for the Evangelizing Action of the Church in Brazil.
The following Redemptorist bishops participated in the meeting:
- Monsignor José Luiz Majella, Metropolitan Archbishop of Pouso Alegre (MG);
- Monsignor José Luiz Ferreira Salles, Bishop of Pesqueira (PE);
- Monsignor Darci José Nicioli, Metropolitan Archbishop of Diamantina (MG);
- Monsignor Geraldo de Paula Souza, Auxiliary Bishop of the Archdiocese of Niterói (RJ);
- Monsignor João Batista Alves do Nascimento, Bishop of Barra (BA);
- Monsignor Joércio Gonçalves Pereira, Bishop Emeritus of Coari (AM);
- Monsignor João Batista Alves do Nascimento, Bishop of Barra (BA).
The meeting of the Brazilian Redemptorist bishops was motivated by the First International Meeting of Redemptorist Bishops, celebrated in June 2025 in the Vatican during the Jubilee of Bishops.
On that occasion, the Provincial Superior of the Province of Our Lady of Aparecida, Fr. Marlos Aurélio da Silva, C.Ss.R., was present and gave a conference on the reorganization of the Congregation of the Most Holy Redeemer to respond to contemporary needs.
During the meeting, the figure of Saint Alphonsus Maria de’ Liguori, founder of the Redemptorist Congregation, was the subject of reflection due to his importance to the Church, as a bishop deeply committed to the care of God’s people.
It should be remembered that, even as bishops, they continue to be Redemptorist missionaries committed to spreading abundant redemption among those most in need, just as the holy founder of the Congregation taught them.
We therefore ask everyone to join us in praying for the Redemptorist bishops who will participate in the 62nd General Assembly of the CNBB (National Conference of Catholic Bishops of Brazil), so that they may discern with wisdom and fidelity the paths of evangelization in Brazil, especially on the occasion of the vote on the new General Guidelines for the Evangelizing Action of the Church in Brazil.
