“Hope reaches where walls cannot stop it.”
In a meaningful gesture of outreach and solidarity, Fr. Nirmal and Fr. Robin of the Jeevanodhaya Community, together with Sr. Mabel of St. Charles Convent, visited the Nanjangudu Sub Jail and Correctional Centre in Karnataka on 1 June 2026. The visit aimed to offer encouragement, support, and hope to the inmates, particularly the young people residing in the facility.
During the visit, the team engaged in personal interactions with the inmates, listening attentively to their life stories, challenges, and aspirations. These conversations created an atmosphere of trust and mutual respect, while conveying a message of compassion, dignity, and the possibility of a fresh start in life.
As part of the observance of World No Tobacco Day, an Anti-Tobacco Awareness Programme was conducted within the correctional centre. The session focused on educating the inmates about the harmful effects of tobacco use on physical and mental health. Participants were encouraged to make positive lifestyle choices and to embrace healthier habits that can contribute to their overall well-being and personal growth.
The programme was warmly received by the inmates, who actively participated in the discussions and reflected on the importance of making responsible decisions for their future. The awareness initiative served as a reminder that every individual, regardless of their circumstances, deserves support, guidance, and opportunities for transformation.
The Jeevanodhaya Community expresses its sincere gratitude to the prison authorities for their warm welcome and cooperation. Special appreciation is extended to Sr. Mabel for her support and initiative in helping to organize and make this meaningful outreach programme possible.
The visit reaffirmed the belief that hope, encouragement, and human connection can inspire positive change, even within the walls of a correctional institution.
Fr. Nirmal Kumar, CSsR.
