St. Mary of Czestochowa Church in Cicero, IL celebrated the annual Blue Mass on June 4. This special Eucharistic celebration was offered for police officers, firefighters, emergency medical personnel, and all first responders serving the communities of Cicero, Berwyn, and Stickney.
Auxiliary Bishop Robert Lombardo of Chicago presided at Mass. In his homily, he emphasized the importance of service to others and reminded those present that every act of genuine sacrifice finds its source in the love of Christ, the Good Shepherd. The Eucharist was a heartfelt expression of gratitude for those who faithfully accept the responsibility of safeguarding our communities each day.
Among those in attendance were representatives of local government, leadership from the police departments of Cicero, Berwyn, and Stickney, police officers, firefighters, emergency medical personnel, their families, and many parishioners. Their presence was a beautiful witness to the unity and mutual respect shared between public safety agencies and the local community.
At the beginning of the liturgy, Fr. Waldemar Latkowski, pastor of Our Lady of Czestochowa and Charity Parish and Dean of Vicariate III, Deanery D (Cicero, Berwyn, and Stickney), welcomed all those gathered. He expressed gratitude in particular to the members of law enforcement, fire departments, and emergency services for their daily commitment and dedicated service to the community.
A special moment during the Mass was the Blessing of Badges for police officers, firefighters, and first responders. During this blessing, prayers were offered for God’s protection over all who serve in these professions. The congregation prayed for wisdom in decision-making, courage in times of danger, safety in the performance of duty, and peace for their families. Special remembrance was also given to those who have made the ultimate sacrifice in service to others.
This year’s Blue Mass once again reminded us that the safety and well-being of our communities are made possible through the daily dedication and sacrifice of many men and women whose service often goes unnoticed. As a faith community, we not only express our gratitude but also pledge our continued prayers for all who serve and protect.
Following the Mass, participants gathered for a group photograph and a reception hosted by the parish. The gathering provided an opportunity for fellowship, conversation, and the strengthening of relationships between the Church, local government leaders, and public safety personnel.
